Who is the Ethiopian Intellectual Property Office?
The EIPO is a government body established (2003) to bring the administration of patents, trademarks and copyrights in Ethiopia under one umbrella organisation. The EIPO aims to be a development-oriented, national intellectual property office promoting the use of intellectual property as a means for social, economic and cultural development.
The EIPO’s major objectives are:
- the protection of intellectual property in the country,
- the provision of technological information,
- the conduct of policy and legal studies and
- the promotion of IP awareness.
In line with the above vision and objectives, the Office has been undertaking various development related activities.
These include the:
- protection of Ethiopian intellectual property abroad,
- the provision of support for the generation, protection and commercialisation of intellectual property assets by Ethiopians,
- awareness raising on the value and importance of IP among the general public and
- facilitation of the transfer of technology.
